Man crushed to death by police van

An 83-year old grandfather has been crushed to death by a runaway police van whilst enjoying an ice cream in a park.

Donald Bennett was killed when a two-tone Ford Transit police van rolled down a slope and struck him whilst he sat on a wall in the sunshine in West Leeds Country Park on Saturday afternoon.

It has been suggested by passers-by that the handbrake had been left off the vehicle as the police rushed to attend to reports of youths misbehaving.

Mr Bennett, who was walking with the aid of two walking sticks following an operation, was driven to the park by one of his sons because he wished to watch a game of bowls.

West Yorkshire Police say that the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
